Wrought iron and steel fences

We build ornamental steel and iron fences for front yards, side yards, and property lines. We also build metal privacy fences and matching walk and drive gates.

Ornamental steel and iron

Black steel or iron pickets sit between flat rails, giving the fence an open design. Under Austin City Code § 25-2-899, the City of Austin calls a fence ornamental when it has no more than one part solid to four parts open, and its height limits don’t apply to ornamental fences. The City of Austin still requires a permit for a fence over 7 feet, including ornamental fences, as covered in the fence height and permit rules.

Flat tops and Austin’s safe-fencing rules

Under Austin City Code § 25-2-899, fences built in the City of Austin since July 31, 2023 can’t have spiked pickets or spikes above the top rail. Our guide covers Austin’s safe-fencing rules.

Metal privacy fences

We set solid metal panels between posts for privacy and a modern look. Your HOA can set the style and material of a fence.

Matching gates

Our gates include walk gates and double drive gates that match the fence. We hang them on heavy hinges with a latch, and we put a drop rod on one leaf of a double gate.

What it costs

Angi’s national fence installation page, updated October 13, 2026, lists wrought iron at $25 to $55 per linear foot. That’s a national figure, and our guide to what a fence costs in Austin has Austin-specific prices.

Questions about iron and steel fences

Does an iron fence need a permit in Austin?

Only in some cases. City of Austin Development Services says a fence in the City of Austin needs a permit if it’s in a floodplain, more than 7 feet high at any point, or more than 6 feet high on residential property along a public right-of-way other than an alley. That applies to ornamental fences too. Read the permit rules.

Can an ornamental fence have spear tops?

For a fence built in the City of Austin since July 31, 2023, Austin City Code § 25-2-899 bars spiked pickets and spiked decorative elements above the top rail, as covered in the safe-fencing rules. Other cities set their own rules.

Can the gate match the fence?

Yes, we can build walk gates and double drive gates with the same pickets and rails as the fence.
